15 rainy day activities

Are the kids getting restless because they are stuck indoors?

Here are some fun activities to keep the entire family occupied on a rainy day.

activities Tip #1

Who says you can only play hide and seek outdoors. If the house or the shelter is big enough, with enough hiding places, you can always play hide and seek.

activities Tip #2

Got some chalk? Draw the boxes on the ground and play hop scotch. It is fun and great exercise for the whole family.

activities Tip #3

A game of monopoly can engage the entire family for hours. Lots of tycoons started off playing monopoly as kids, so that is a great way to learn about finances

activities Tip #4

Alone on a rainy day? Try the number game sudoko. It appeals to anyone who likes an intellectual challenge. Both my son and my mom love the game. They share sudoko books.

activities Tip #5

A rainy day is a great time to embark on a project. Make that a fun and education science project. These science experiments should get the kids started.

activities Tip #6

On the creative side, how about setting up a puppet theater? The entire family can get involved in setting up the stage and preparing a show for friends.

activities Tip #7

Little kids would love the balloon lagoon. My kid got that while he was in preschool. The whole family got addicted to the fun, carnival style game.

activities Tip #8

Write a book and self publish it. You and the kids can work together on the story line and the kids can even do the illustrations. Then you can upload you book on lulu.com and have that printed out and delivered to your home.

activities Tip #9

Play a game of scrabble. That's a great educational game for the kids in which mom and dad can join in. You could give kids the edge over you by letting them use the dictionary.

activities Tip #10

Be an artist. Take out lots of paper, paints and brushes and have fun painting whatever you might imagine. Let kids paint their stories on paper, or pictures of their favourite things or even caricatures of people you know.

activities Tip #11

Got a piano or a musical instrument? Compose some music. Let everyone contribute. Then record the entire score in you family music album. Better yet, dance to the music or get their toys to dance to the music and upload the video to youtube.

activities Tip #12

Not musical? How about poetry? Express yourself in a poem. Get kids to do funny rhymes and start a collection of funny poetry.

activities Tip #13

Read a book. Get a stack of books like the Narnia series which everyone, kids and grown ups love. Or check out sfxfantasy series for teenage girls, and tween tales for preteen boys and girls who are advanced readers.

activities Tip #14

Play a game of charades. Divide players into 2 groups. Judges will (not in either group) think of a movie, object, sentence or anything around an agreed on theme, and write that down. A representative from each group gets a slip of paper with the word or sentence and returns to his or her group and wordlessly (no mouthing the words either) acts out the sentence or word. The group that guesses correctly first wins.

activities Tip #15

Play Pictionary. Instead of acting out the word or sentence as in charades, you draw pictures (no words) to depict the sentence. Whichever team guesses correctly first, wins.
