My kids, both boys, are now aged 9 and 11 and are totally into chess. I bought a book on chess strategies for my older son and he brought it to school to study. I got him a small chess set to start with. The cheapest I could find as I wasn't sure if he would be interested in it. Now he is bugging everyone to play chess with him. He check mated his grandpa in 15 minutes.

Chess is the thinking man or thinking woman's game. It teaches one how to strategize. To me it is a great educational game in that it forces one to think. Chess builds a person's analytical skills. For a kid who has to study math and science for the exams, chess is a game that helps train the kids logic, which should translate to better math and science results. Of course, the child has to study his math and science topics as well, and not just play chess.

Women do play chess, but even in this modern society, chess is considered one of the most macho games around. Chess and boxing. In both, winner takes all. For chess, once the king is taken, the game ends. In boxing, once the opponent is knocked out, the one left standing wins. One is all about brains, while the other is about brawn. One of the most intriguing sports that has emerged is chess boxing which combines the two.
Then again, I'm not into my kids taking up boxing. Just chess. Brains count, and chess builds brain 'muscle'.
If you have kids, get them started on chess because it will give them an edge in their studies.
