Marvel girl is a member of the x-men. Her name is Jean Grey. She is a telepath, with telekinetic powers as well. She was one of the first few pupils to join Professor Xavier's school for gifted youngsters.
Jean Grey and Scott Summers (Cyclops) are a couple. It is a love triangle actually. Wolverine (Logan) and Jean were a couple before she paired off with Scott.
In the original x-men, Marvel Girl became the Phoenix in a solar radiation storm as she piloted the shuttle while fending off the radiation with her powers. Her powers were not enough to protect her from the radiation, and she appeared to have died, only to have her body taken over by the Phoenix force. Jean was not trained to control the immense power that phoenix force possessed. When the mastermind took control of Jean, in order to prove his worth to the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, her dark side took over. She became the dark phoenix who wreaked incredible devastation. Jean came to her senses and took over the phoenix, but apparently committed suicide to prevent the dark phoenix from ever surfacing again.
